Digital Sandbox

As a kid I used to love to play in my sandbox, so when I found out UC Davis had made their Augmented Reality Sandbox software open source I couldn't resist bringing that childhood joy into the digital age with this "just for fun" side project. The sandbox was on display in the at the IIT Institute of Design River North and Downtown campus locations in Chicago from 2015 until the school was re-located to the Mies Campus’ Kaplan Institute.

How it came to be...

Inspired by the mixed reality interface and the need for something fantastic and magical around the studio, I obtained funding to build the project. The photos below show major points along the several hundred hour journey...and the end result was even better than imagined! I do hope you have an opportunity to play with one someday–it's relaxing and hypnotic!
